The southern Gulf Islands are scattered across the Salish Sea between Vancouver Island and the mainland, in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island's mountains, which makes them among the driest and sunniest places on the BC coast in summer. Rocky, south-facing slopes above the water host small, largely hand-worked vineyards on Salt Spring, Pender and Saturna, producing aromatic whites, Pinot Noir and sparkling alongside cider. The islands hold their own official GI, distinct from Vancouver Island, and almost everything arrives and leaves by ferry.
